Jupiter Ascending is a 2015 science fiction film written and directed by Lana and Andy Wachowski. It stars Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis and Sean Bean. The film tells the story of Jupiter Jones (Kunis), an ordinary cleaner living in Chicago who learns that her genetic makeup marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos. When a matriarch named Mary Appleyard (Pam Grier) recognizes the girl's potential, she opens up to her, grooming Jupiter to take on her burden-bearing job one day. The film began development in 2008, when Warner Bros. purchased the film rights to the 1985 novel "Jupiter Ascending" by "Time" columnist and science fiction author Kim Stanley Robinson. Story elements were inspired by the writings of Carlos Castaneda; growing up, both Wachowskis read his books about other worlds and thought they "would make great science fiction movies". With their first three films—"Bound", "The Matrix", and "V for Vendetta"—the Wachowskis established a reputation for visual spectacle; they considered making "Jupiter Ascending" into a live-action film after completing their Speed Racer adaptation, but decided to do so only after making Cloud Atlas. The film was also influenced by Japanese director Akira Kurosawa's samurai films. The script was written as the Wachowskis were developing the Cloud Atlas screenplay, and they filmed a live-action test of Jupiter Jones' character before deciding to make a computer-generated film, which involved the creation of more than 300 characters. Filming began on August 3, 2014, at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney. The film was shot using 35 mm film and stereoscopic 3D cameras. Lana Wachowski wrote virtual cinematography software for this purpose after learning that some contemporary filmmakers had been doing so for over a decade.
